Tamara Hunter is an Associate Professional Counselor, Dance/Movement Therapist, Certified School Counselor in the state of Georgia, and Certified Early Childhood Educator in the state of Georgia. Tamara earned a M.S. degree in Dance/Movement Therapy from Pratt Institute, M.A. degree in School Counseling and B.A. degree in Early Childhood Education from Clark Atlanta University.

Tamara currently provides therapy in a private practice setting located in Douglasville, Georgia. She is a perinatal trained provider specializing in infertility, pregnancy, reproductive and infant loss, still birth, birth trauma, and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. Tamara is passionate about empowering women by imparting support, encouragement, education & therapeutic coping techniques.

Tamara’s experience includes working with children, adolescents, and adults in individual, family, and group therapy. Tamara has worked in inpatient & outpatient behavioral health facilities, residential treatment centers and the public-school system. Tamara specializes in Dance/Movement Therapy psycho-therapeutic interventions designed to assist with symptoms caused by trauma, anxiety, depression, anger, self-esteem & chemical dependency.

Tamara has turned her pain into purpose by hosting Facebook Live discussions providing a platform for Maternal Mental Health conversations. In 2019 she launched Womb Wisdom podcast on SoundCloud. This podcast features black women’s reproductive health, mental health, & maternal mental health journeys. It provides a healing platform for black women to share their womb stories through the power of storytelling. She is an advocate of women’s reproductive rights and health. Tamara has participated in roundtable discussion’s brainstorming solutions to address the black maternal mortality rate and research on Perinatal Mental Health Experiences and Infertility in Black Couples.

During her employment with Northside Hospital, Atlanta, GA Tamara identified the importance of supporting Mother’s after birth. She advocated and was successful in providing postpartum supportive services. Tamara was responsible for recruiting, pre-screening, formulating curriculum, and facilitating postpartum support group for Mothers.

Tamara was a selected member of the Rapid Improvement Team at Kings County Hospital, NYC where she developed policies and standards of work to integrate the treatment of mental health and substance abuse in behavioral health. In recognition of her skill level, she was selected to attend the Behavior Health Leadership Scholarship Summit held in New Orleans, LA in 2012 sponsored by the Network for the Improvement of Addiction Treatment. The conference theme, presented to staff upon her return, focused on rethinking the business model of addiction, mental health, and recovery services by presenting evidenced-based practices for improved outcomes with clients.

Tamara is passionate about helping others identify inner strengths to support their healing process. She utilizes, encouragement, humor, person-centered, holistic approaches as well as therapeutic skills of empathy and attunement, to provide a safe space for clients to engage in, and manage, their own healing journeys.
